What it tastes like

Dark and smoky, without the burnt edge.

Taken past the second crack, so the sweetness caramelises rather than sharpens. It holds its shape in milk, which is why it is the coffee most people settle on.

Questions people ask

About this coffee

Which grind should I choose?
Pick the brewer you actually use and we grind to match. If you use more than one, or you're not sure, choose whole beans and grind at home for the freshest cup.
Is this good with milk?
Yes. It's roasted dark enough to hold its character in milk, which is why it's our most reordered coffee. It also works as a strong black coffee.
Can I use this for cold brew?
Yes. Choose the cold brew grind, steep in cold water for 12 to 24 hours, then strain. A dark roast gives a fuller, chocolatier cold brew.
How long does a bag last?
A 250g bag makes about 15 cups at 16g a cup, so roughly two weeks at one a day. Households drinking two or more usually choose 500g or 1kg.
How is this different from Deep Bliss?
Both are dark roasts. Tall Dark Handsome is smokier and rounder in milk. Deep Bliss is slower-roasted and suits pour-over and filter drinkers who take it black.

Coffee, generally

Does dark roast coffee have more caffeine?

No, slightly less. Roasting burns off a small amount of caffeine, so darker beans hold marginally less than lighter ones. Because dark beans are also less dense, a scoop of dark roast carries noticeably less caffeine than a scoop of light roast. Measured by weight the difference is small.

Is dark roast coffee bitter?

It should not be. Harsh bitterness usually comes from over-extraction, stale coffee or a grind that is too fine for the brewer, rather than from the roast itself. A well-roasted dark coffee tastes bittersweet, like dark chocolate, not burnt.

What does roasted to order actually mean?

We roast your coffee after you place the order rather than shipping from pre-roasted stock, and every bag carries the date it was roasted. Most coffee sold in India was roasted weeks or months before it reaches you.

How long does coffee stay fresh after roasting?

Coffee is at its best in the two to four weeks after roasting. After about six weeks the flavour fades, though it does not spoil. This is why the roast date matters more than the expiry date on a bag of specialty coffee.

How should I store coffee beans at home?

Keep the bag sealed, somewhere cool and dark. Not in the fridge, where condensation and food smells get in, and not on top of the machine where it stays warm. Buy quantities you will finish in a few weeks rather than stockpiling.

What is the difference between washed and natural processed coffee?

Washed coffee is pulped and fermented, then washed clean before drying, which gives a cleaner, more consistent cup that shows the bean itself. Natural coffee dries with the fruit still on, which pushes it fruitier and heavier.

Is single estate coffee better than a blend?

Not better, different. Single estate coffee comes from one farm and expresses that place and season. Blends are built to hold a consistent taste across seasons. Each of our coffees says on its page where it was grown.

Arabica or Robusta, which is better?

Arabica is sweeter, more aromatic and more complex. Robusta is stronger and more bitter, with roughly twice the caffeine, and is often used to add body and crema to espresso.

How much coffee should I use per cup?

Around 15 to 18 grams of coffee for a 250ml cup is a good starting point, then adjust to taste.
